2012 State Fair third most attended

RALEIGH

Officials say the fair was successful, even though attendance came up short of the 1 million mark.

Although fair attendance this year did break some records, it was still down slightly compared to last year.

"It's been pretty good," food vendor Amanda McLamb said. "It's been a little bit slower than last year, but we've done really good for as small as we are."

State Agriculture commissioner Steve Troxler said the 2012 fair is the third largest in history.

Only two days welcomed more visitors than 2011's State Fair. Final figures show the fair drew about 965, 297 during its 11-day run.

Last year, just over 1 million people attended the fair. In 2010, attendance nearly reached 1.1 million.

Troxler said officials changed access to some of the animals this year after two dozen people got sick from an E. coli outbreak last year. Hand-washing stations got better lighting and larger signs. Some stations explained how to wash hands.
