It happened around 2 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Lake Wheeler Road and Hilltop Needmoore Road.
The Highway Patrol said 22-year-old Ross Mayfield ran a red light and ran into another car, which was pushed into a utility pole.
The driver in the second car, 24-year-old Aaron Allgood, died in the accident.
Mayfield has been charged with DWI.
