Friends, family remember Garner teen

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C.

The ninth grader at Garner High was killed last Monday morning on Highway 50 while walking with her brother.

Highway Patrol said Maria Jimenez was walking to her school bus and was getting ready to board when she was hit by a car. Maria was pronounced dead at the scene.

At Monday's visitation service, many wore purple, which they said was Maria's favorite color.

Jimenez's grandparents flew from Mexico on a special visa so they could say goodbye. The family had not seen each other in a decade.

A family spokesperson who spoke to ABC11 said the family is doing its best to stay strong, but they are worried about Maria's brother.

"He was right there when it happened and he is in denial. He doesn't want to talk about it. He thinks he's in a dream," said family spokesperson Abigail Jackson.

The driver is not facing any charges. The Highway Patrol said it was dark and the driver was not speeding and the red lights on the bus were not flashing. However, they are still investigating.
