Driver almost hits police officer, flips car

DURHAM

The incident started around 5 a.m. when an officer pulled over a white vehicle in front of Compare Foods on Avondale Drive and issued the driver a ticket.

Authorities said as the officer went back to his police cruiser, the driver backed into the front end of the cruiser and drove off.

The driver then stopped behind a nearby shopping center after the officer tried to flag him down and got out of the cruiser. Authorities said the driver nearly hit the officer as he drove away again and hit a dumpster. The officer was not hurt.

As the driver fled down East Club Boulevard, he crashed his vehicle, flipping it several times before it came to a stop near Glenbrook Drive.

The driver was unconscious and trapped in the vehicle when the officer who originally wrote him a citation arrived at the scene.

Durham fire crews and EMS were called to the scene to free the driver and took him to Duke University Hospital.

The driver, whose name has not been released, suffered serious injuries, according to authorities.

The accident shutdown East Club Boulevard between Glenbrook and Dearborn drives as crews worked to clear the area.

It is unclear what charges the driver faces.
