According to a police report, Mangum was riding his bike down a hill when Castelloe turned left in front of him.

Castelloe was apparently headed to his home a couple of blocks away. He was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield right of way.

Meanwhile, a makeshift memorial for Mangum has been placed at the corner of Marlowe and Lassiter Mill roads.

Mangum was a member of the family that once owned the C.C. Mangum Construction Company. The company was sold to the Fred Smith Company years ago and the name was changed.

Mangum later started C.C. Mangum Consulting in Raleigh and was the president and CEO of the company.
