Carolina Hurricanes sign Jared Staal

RALEIGH

The President and General Manager of the team, Jim Rutherford, announced Tuesday that they signed the right wing to the two-way contract.

The deal will pay Staal $550,000 on the National Hockey League (NHL) level or $60,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level during the 2013-14 season. The 22 year old appeared in his first NHL season last year, skating in two games with the Hurricanes.

The Thunder Bay, Ont., native made his NHL debut on April 25 against the New York Rangers, starting the game on the same line with his two older brothers, Eric and Jordan.

Selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the second round, 49th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Staal was acquired by the Hurricanes in May 2010. He has totaled eight goals and 10 assists (18 points) in 119 career AHL games with San Antonio, Providence and Charlotte.
