Heat wave can take toll on elderly

RALEIGH

Now, just like the temperature, heat related calls to 911 are spiking. Many patients are elderly.

With the heat index nearing 100, anyone can fall victim to the heat.

"With the elderly who are already sick, we see those cases get a little bit worse in these really hot conditions," said Wake County EMS District chief Jeff Hammerstein.

Wake EMS crews have responded to 25 heat-related calls in the last ten days -- more than half of those occurred just this week.

"These are definitely days when neighbors should be checking on each other," said Hammerstein. "Friends, family should be calling to see how their loved ones are doing."

EMS says limiting your time outside is especially important in the peak of the summer, and no matter your age, staying hydrated and taking breaks are key too when you have to be out in the elements.

"There is not anyone who is not susceptible to this heat," said Hammerstein.

Locally, Meals on Wheels is offering to deliver fans to their clients in need. If you or someone you know could use one, you can contact their office.
