One person dead after double shooting in Durham

DURHAM

Officers say the gunshots began ringing out around 3 p.m. at Lyon Park off Fairview Street near Chapel Hill Road.

Police say two men were shot inside a black vehicle in the parking lot.

Quaysean Tymeek Malachi, 20, of High Point was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The other victim - who has yet to be identified by police - was also taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

An eyewitness told ABC11 he saw one of the victims trying to get out of the car after being shot.

"I noticed the doors open and then I heard someone like they might have been screaming or crying," said Craig Jones .

"I turned the corner and 19 police cars and that black [car] across the way was the center of attention. They were getting at least one person out of there," added eyewitness John Edgerton.

Edgerton said he often takes his 6-year-old over to the park to play, and he said he is thankful he did not go this Saturday afternoon.

"That park has been perfectly safe for some time now and it's used quite a bit by families and kids, so this is a very surprising event for me. I would not have expected that to happen here, but I guess that could happen anywhere," he said.

Detectives were working to learn who was behind the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (919) 683-1200.
