Homeowner Richard Merkle, who is a retired firefighter, told ABC11 that he, his wife, their 20-year-old son and their dog were all sleeping inside the house with the fire started in the attic.

Merkle said his son heard the smoke detectors going off and woke them up. The family made it out safely and was not injured.

He also said that he was shocked and bewildered by the fact that the fire started in the attic, because it was an unoccupied space in the 5,000 square foot home.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
