How does the 2024 ACC Baseball Championship work?

The ACC Baseball Championship works a bit differently than most ACC postseason tournaments.

It begins with only the top 12 teams making the tournament. They are then seeded and divided into four three-team pools.

  • Pool A - UNC, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh
  • Pool B - Clemson, Louisville, Miami
  • Pool C - NC State, Duke, Virginia Tech
  • Pool D - Virginia, Florida State, Georgia Tech

Each team then plays one game against the other teams in their respective pools. The team in each pool with the best record advances to the semifinals. If each team in a given pool split their two games (i.e. finish pool play with one win and one loss), the highest seed would advance. The top seeds in each division are UNC, Clemson, NC State and Virginia.

The winner of Pool A will play the winner of Pool D and the winner of Pool B will play the winner of Pool D in a single elimination semifinals.

The winners of those two games will then face off in a winner-take-all championship game Sunday, May 26 at noon on ESPN2.

All games will be played at Truist Field in Charlotte, North Carolina. That's the home of the Chicago White Sox's Triple-A affiliated club: the Charlotte Knights. For ticketing information, click here.

In addition, North Carolina could really be considered the center of college baseball with UNC, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest and East Carolina all being ranked and expected to compete for a trip to the College World Series. ECU is competing in the 2024 American Baseball Championship at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida.

Wake Forest cruises to 8-1 victory

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons easily dispatched the Pittsburgh Panthers.

It was the first game for Pool A, which features Wake, Pitt and UNC. The loss eliminates Pitt's chances to advance in the tournament.

Pitt plays UNC at 3 p.m. Thursday. The result of the game will not change the outcome of the tournament.

The only remaining game for Pool A that matters is the matchup between UNC and Wake Forest on Friday at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the 2024 ACC Baseball Championship semifinals.

Virginia routs Georgia Tech in abbreviated game

The Virginia Cavaliers run ruled Georgia Tech (13-0) in the opening game of day 2 at the 2024 ACC Baseball Championship.

Virginia is the top seeded team in Pool D. This victory, following Florida State's victory against Georgia Tech on Tuesday means Pool D will be decided Friday when Virginia and Florida State face off.

The two teams are both 1-0 and their game Friday is expected to be a close battle. Virginia is the 4th seed in the tournament; Florida State is the 5th seed.

The 0-2 performance for Georgia Tech this weekend puts the team's hopes for an at-large bid into the NCAA Division I baseball tournament in serious jeopardy. Experts had the Yellow Jackets on the bubble coming into the weekend.

The NCAA Baseball Tournament Selection Show will take place Monday at 12 p.m. on ESPN2.
