The CIAA commissioner says negotiations are underway to keep the tournament in Charlotte through at least 2011.
The week long event, made up of 10 HBCUs, including Shaw University and St. Augustine's College, moved to Charlotte from Raleigh in 2006.
Last year, the tournament drew more than 165,000 fans and poured more than $27 million into Charlotte's economy.
This year's events will take place February 25 through March 1.
