Fire rages through Durham apartment

DURHAM

The fire broke out at the /*New Haven Apartments*/ near the corner of Ellis Road and Miami Boulevard Sunday afternoon.

From a distance, neighbors watched as flames tore through a ground floor apartment, threatening the five other attached units.

"We were very worried that our place would go up but that wasn't our main concern. Our main concern was everyone was out," said AJ Hall, resident at the New Haven Apartments.

The woman and her three children living inside the ground floor apartment escaped, but their unit was completely destroyed.

The neighboring apartment sustained smoke and water damage, the others were spared. No one was hurt.

Investigators have not said what caused the fire.

Firefighters were called out to the same complex in Durham last weekend.

Investigators believe someone might have set fire to the mail room at the complex. Some mail was destroyed. No one was hurt in that incident neither.
