Raleigh, Durham rank high for small businesses

RALEIGH

A new survey finds the Raleigh-Durham area is among the best places in the country to launch a business.

Fortune Small Business magazine has ranked Durham 12th and Raleigh 20th on its first list of the "Best Places to Live and Launch." The magazine cites the Bull City's biotech and pharmaceutical industries.

Raleigh was praised for its industries and being more car friendly.

The rankings focus on cities that combine the best mix of business conditions and lifestyle options. The magazine examined tax rates, startup activity, housing affordability and ease of access to cultural activities.

Bellevue, Washington topped the list. Charlotte came in at No. 8.
