Man dead after chasing woman, shooting at her

APEX

Police said they received a call around 10:45 a.m. about an incident that began on U.S. 1 in Chatham County, but ended up in Apex.

Investigators say 35-year-old Jeremy Jones of Sanford chased an ex-girlfriend down the highway with his vehicle.

"She called and said her ex-boyfriend and she were on US 1," Apex Police Det. Joey Best said. "She knew he was armed with a handgun."

When Apex officers caught up to the vehicles at Old Smithfield Road, they witnessed Jones shooting at the woman's car.

"A couple of officers actually witnessed the descendent in this case fire multiple rounds at and into the victim's car," Best said.

Moments later, the man rear-ended another car that was being driven by Munevver Bal.

"It was fast," crash victim," Bal said. "First time I didn't realize what happened. Police man came to me and he said, we have to get out of the car because the guy had a gun."

The woman and child in the third vehicle are okay.

Jones then apparently shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jones' ex-girlfriend only suffered minor scratches despite her car being shot up.

"From the evidence that we found in her vehicle, she's very fortunate that she was not injured," Best said.

They say even though there was no restraining order in the case, there had been another incident between the woman and her ex-boyfriend in recent days.
