On May 10, 21-year-old Cpl. Kurt S. Shea of Frederick, Md., died while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. The incident surrounding his death is under investigation.
He deployed to Afhghanistan in November 2009.
Shea was a radio operator assigned to 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division Forward. He joined the Marine Corps in June 2007, and was promoted to the rank of corporal on April 1, 2009.
His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and NATO International Security Assistance Force Medal.
The second Marine was killed on May 7 in Helmand province. Lance Cpl. Joshua M. Davis, 19, was a native of Perry, Iowa.
Davis was a machine gunner assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. Davis joined the Marine Corps in March 2009, and was promoted to the rank of lance corporal on May 1, 2010.
His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
Davis had arrived in Afghanistan in March.
The third Marine is identified as 22-year-old Lance Cpl. Christopher Rangel of San Antonio, Texas.
Rangel was a fire team leader assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. Rangel joined the Marine Corps in April 2007, and was promoted to the rank of lance corporal on June 1, 2008.
He was deployed to Iraq from April to October 2008 and then to Afghanistan in January 2010.
His awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Iraq Campaign Medal.
Rangel is survived by his wife.
