Proposed 540 route through Garner remains on the table

GARNER The so-called "red route" would take the southeast 540 expansion through the Town of Garner.

Residents believe it will split the town in half and have an adverse economic impact.

On Thursday afternoon, the Turnpike Authority met with Garner's mayor and environmental partners to try to eliminate the route as an option.

"It's put a lot of stress on me and I feel like I got a ton of bricks on my chest until it's taken off," Mayor Ronnie Williams said.

The mayor says he plans to work with the Turnpike Authority to come up with an alternative route.
