It happened on Lake Wheeler Road south of Penny Road. Pictures from Chopper 11 HD showed the vehicle on its roof in a wooded area between the road and the lake near Lake Wheeler Park.
The child's mother - 24-year-old Heather Lucas - was also injured. She was listed in stable condition at WakeMed.
A NC Highway Patrol officer on the scene said it appeared that Lucas lost control, overcorrected, and went off the road. Troopers also said a child seat in the vehicle and straps were not properly secured.
