A spokesperson said 51-year-old Jimmy Griffin collapsed while taking part in outside recreation in the yard Thursday.
He died Sunday night at a local hospital.
Correction officials said after an initial internal investigation of the incident, prison management decided to ask the SBI to look into what may have lead to the medical emergency and Griffin's death.
Griffin was serving a life sentence for a 1981 second-degree murder conviction in Columbus County according to Correction Department records.
