It happened around 3:50 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Bailey Lake and Strickland Bridge roads near Raeford Road.
Authorities said Officer Donnie Smith was driving a police cruiser to a breaking and entering call when he swerved to avoid another vehicle entering the roadway, ran off the road, and hit a tree head-on.
Smith was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with minor injuries. No one else was injured in the crash.
No charges have been filed in connection with the accident.
