Teen charged with attempted murder in school attack

BAILEY, N.C.

The teen is charged as a juvenile with attempted first-degree murder and possession of a weapon on school grounds. The girl was previously charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

Deputies said the girl attacked 16-year-old Jasmine Barnes with a scalpel in a break between classes Tuesday morning and slashed her throat.

Barnes was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for further treatment. She was last listed in good condition.

A meeting was held with parents Wednesday evening at Southern Nash to address concerns. Officials said some additional security measures are in place and additional deputies will be on campus as needed.
