Truck driver charged in cyclist's death

RALEIGH

Clifton Paul Ellis, 28, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision. He turned himself in to authorities Thursday.

Steven Jordan, the Director of the North Carolina Division of Mental Health Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services, was killed when he was hit from behind by an empty logging truck driven by Ellis. It happened shortly after 2:15 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Louisburg and Perry Creek Roads.

The accident report states Jordan, 49, was headed north on Louisburg in the far right lane when the truck attempted to pass him. It also states that Ellis did not move over far enough and hit Jordan.

Ellis allegedly told investigators he couldn't move over further because of traffic in the center lane.
