Teen killed crossing street in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.

It happened on South Reilly Road and Northumberland Street near Fort Bragg just after 5 p.m.

Officials said 39-year-old Karen Adamson, of Fayetteville, was driving an Infinity SUV when she struck Matthew Beharry as he tried to cross the street with a friend.

An eyewitness said the two teens were coming back from the grocery store and made it to the center of the roadway before the accident happened.

"They got halfway right along in here, that's where she had stopped at," Roberta Hunt said.

A combat special forces medic who saw the accident stopped to help Beharry until fire medics arrived and transported him to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he later died.

Beharry was a 10th grader at Westover High School.

Police are still trying to decide if any charges should be filed against Adamson.

Meanwhile, Beharry's father, Glenn Beharry, and residents who live and work in the area are pushing to get a traffic light and crosswalk installed at the intersection where the accident happened.
