Pair sentenced for Chapel Hill carjacking

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C.

That woman survived a horrific assault and carjacking. She was unable to be in the courtroom so her statement was read.

However, it would be the fiery words from the Orange County district attorney that convinced the judge to sentence 22-year-old Marcus Carpenter and 20-year-old Mark Smith to up to two years in prison.

The victim says she was attacked in her driveway on Gristmill Lane.

"She was a woman alone -- followed her into her driveway," said Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall. "They didn't just shove her. They knocked her down, broke her shoulder, and punched her in her face, and then they would've backed over her if she hadn't moved."

The victim says she ended up with several broken bones and more than $69,000 in medical bills.

In her statement, she said she still struggles with what happened, and will likely never forgive her attackers.

Carpenter and Smith's sentences will follow the six to eight year sentence they were given in Durham this week in an unrelated case.
