Councilman resigns

MEBANE Mebane City Councilman Bob Hupman stepped down Friday.

"It has been my privilege to serve the City of Mebane for more than twenty eight years," he wrote in a letter to the City. "There are some issues in my business that require my full attention."

The former councilman was the subject of an Eyewitness News investigation in 2005. We confronted him about delinquent taxes. At the time, he owed more taxes than anyone else in the state of North Carolina.

According to revenue officials, that money has still not been paid. Hupman owes North Carolina $2.2 million in back taxes. He also owes the IRS almost $4 million in unpaid federal taxes.

Hupman's term on the Mebane City Council was not due to expire until December.
