Former Fayetteville police chief dies

HOPE MILLS, NC At the time of his death, 62-year-old Tom McCarthy was the interim Hope Mills police chief.

He is being remembered for his many years of service.

After retiring from the Fayetteville Police Department in 2007, he re-entered the work force and was hired to serve as the Chapel Hill police chief.

However, McCarthy did not pass the physical examination required for the job. He later agreed to serve as interim chief in Hope Mills.

The cause of McCarthy's death is unknown, but he had a history of heart trouble. He suffered two heart attacks during his life.

Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills is handling the arrangement.
