North Carolina native killed in Afghanistan

Military officials say a New York-based soldier has been killed in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced Monday that 33-year-old Sgt. Donald R. Edgerton of Murphy, N.C., died July 10 near Char Dara, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device.

Edgerton was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum.
