Duke student dies after fall

DURHAM

Drew Everson, a senior from Tampa, Florida, died Sunday at Duke Hospital. Officials say someone found him unconscious and severely injured near a stairwell at the East Union, also known as Marketplace, on Duke's campus late Friday morning.

Everson slipped into a coma and later died.

Police say their investigation indicates Everson's injuries were the result of an accidental fall, but exactly how it happened is still under investigation.

The senior was expected to graduate this spring.

"I do feel that pain and I know the students feel it deeply and Drew's family feels it deeply," said Steve Nowicki, dean and vice provost for undergraduate education at Duke University.

Nowicki says he taught Everson his sophomore year.

"Drew is going to be missed here as a student deeply, but all of those people who had the privilege to know him while he was here will carry with them a real sense of Drew's insight, intelligence, warmth and wit," Nowicki said.

The university will pay tribute to Everson at the Duke Chapel on Wednesday. The service is open to the public.

Everson's family will also remember him in his hometown.
