Police capture man that hurt police dog

WAKE FOREST Marcus Antwan Richardson, 21, of Knightdale was arrested late Friday afternoon during a vehicle stop in Zebulon. He was charged with felony assault on a police animal and resisting a public officer. He was also processed on several additional warrants, including probation violation.

Police had been searching for Richardson, 21, since Thursday when he fled from officers attempting to serve him with several outstanding warrants. While responding to assist in the pursuit, a Wake Forest police officer struck K9 Maverick with his vehicle, seriously injuring the animal.

Maverick, a Belgian Malinois, had emergency surgery late Thursday at N.C. State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. He remained in critical but stable condition Saturday.

Richardson is currently being held in the Wake County Detention Center under $332,000 bond. His first court appearance is Monday.
