Prosecutors are winding their way through their witness list and could be winding down.
They hope the testimony will clearly tie Lovette to the crime that rocked the UNC campus and the nation back in March 2008. That's when Carson was kidnapped, robbed and shot to death.
Monday, witnesses testified about DNA samples taken from Lovette. Investigators say the samples link him to the crime.
Witnesses also testified about searching places where Lovette hung out, including his car and the home where Demario Atwater lived with his mother. Atwater has already pleaded guilty to the murder in federal court and is serving a life sentence.
One of the first officers on the scene in the neighborhood where Carson's body was found told jurors what they learned during the first day of the investigation.
"We knew that she had not been sexually assaulted. We knew that she had been shot with a .25 caliber weapon and had four wounds to indicate such, as well as a shotgun wound to the head," said Sgt. Celisa Lehew with the Chapel Hill Police Department. "We knew that the .25 caliber shots came prior to the shotgun wound."
Much of Monday afternoon was spent with Sgt. Lehew on the stand.
