Homes evacuated in police standoff

DURHAM

Officers were called to a domestic disturbance at a house in the 800 block of Springdale Drive shortly before 6 a.m.

When they arrived, investigators discovered that a female had been assaulted at the location. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that police said do not appear to be life-threatening.

In the meantime, police said, the male suspect held his mother hostage and refused to come out of the house.

Officers from the Durham Police Department's Hostage Negotiation Team and Selective Enforcement Team were able to talk the man out of the house shortly before 10 a.m. The man and his mother were both unharmed.

Investigators identified the suspect as Saquan Evans, 21, of Durham. Charges are pending.

Houses in the immediate vicinity were evacuated during the incident and officers closed down several streets in the area.
